The magnitude-7 . 1 earthquake hit a mountainous area in Qinghai province , with an altitude of 4 , 000 metres . The death toll on 17 April rose to 1 , 339more than 11 , 800 people were reported injured . Food , drinking water , weatherproof tents , blanketsclothes were in short supply , a local official was reported as saying .
