epa02128187 (FILE) An undated handout photo provided by Spink Auction House on 25 March 2010 shows a portrait of Major John Simpson Knox (wearing his miniature medals) who was awarded the first ever Victoria Cross. The first Victoria Cross to be won by a British army soldier together with the cannonball which blew off his arm has fetched GBP 252,000 (more than double its estimate GBP 120,000) at at Spink Auction House in London, Britain, according to reports on 22 April 2010. The incredibly rare medal was awarded to Major Knox by Queen Victoria on 26 June 1857, for his exceptional heroism during the Crimean war. The full size medal is being sold with a Russian cannonball, the very one that claimed Knox's left arm at the battle of Sebastopol. A fellow soldier had picked it up from the battlefield to give to Knox as an unusual keepsake. EPA/SPINK AUCTION HOUSE / HO EDITORIAL USE ONLY
