In spring of 1940, some 4,200 Polish officersintellectuals were executed by Soviet soldiersburied in the forest some 400 kilometres west of Moscow. The mass murder was admitted by then Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev only in 1990. In the row over reconciliation for the victims, activists scored a partial success. 'Memorial' organisation enforced coming to terms with the massacre as Russia's supreme court overturned on 21 April 2010 a judgement by a Moscow military court dating 2009.  EPA/WOLFGANG JUNG
