German President Horst Koehler resigned with immediate effect 31 May 2010, over recent controversial comments he made about Germany?s military role in Afghanistan.  Comments made by Koehler after a trip to Afghanistan earlier in May were interpreted as suggesting that the German military was active in the region in part to defend economic interests.  EPA/TIM BRAKEMEIER
