International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is celebrated on 29 May annually, to pay tribute to menwomen serving in UN peacekeeping operationsto honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. A number of 121 UN peacekeepers lost their lives in 2009. 'This year's commemoration is especially sombre. The past 14 months have marked one of the deadliest periods in the more than 60-year-history of United Nations peacekeeping,' Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement.
