epa02175244 A police handout photo showing one of the protected falcons which were recovered by the Spanish National Police during a operation against the international animal trafficking carried out in Badajoz , Spain , 27 May 2010 . A total of 22 protected birds were recovered in the operation , in which nine persons from Spain , Belgium , United KingdomGermany were arrested . The species were held in crammed cages under dreadful conditions , police said .
